Argentina’s Lionel Messi is the current holder of the Ballon d’Or award after having won it for the past three years, but he is widely expected to lose this crown to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery when the award ceremony takes place in January. Messi has not been performing up to his exceptional standard he has set in the last few years, but Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero says that Messi is still the best player in the world according to him. Aguero has a great relationship with Messi due to his connections in the national team.
Both strikers have been doing exceptionally well for Argentina in recent World Cup qualifying matches. They have been playing together since the age of 17. Aguero has said that irrespective of who wins the Ballon d’Or award this campaign, the Barcelona superstar will be the best player. Aguero has not come into contention for this award, but he is expected to do so in the next year. He has begun the season extremely well with Manchester City. He is the top scorer in the league with 10 goals.
“Messi is a very important person to me. Lionel is the best footballer in the world, but to me we are friends first, always. We started playing together when we were just 17 years old. He was always going to be the best, always. He’s the number one and maybe I can be number two. Not yet though, I’m doing OK but I have to keep training hard and playing well,” said Aguero to the BBC.
He has formed an exceptional partnership with Alvaro Negredo, who came from Sevilla in a £ 25 million deal in the summer. Despite Aguero scoring a lot of goals, City are outside the top four at the moment.
Lionel Messi made sure that Barcelona’s unbeaten run in the ongoing Champions League would continue as he scored a brilliant leveller against AC Milan yesterday night.
The match eventually ended in the form of a draw and both the teams were given one point each. With that one point, Barcelona’s points tally went to 7 and they remained the first team in the Group H points table.
The start of the match was pretty disastrous for Barca as they conceded a goal in the 9th minute. It was Robinho who gave the visitors that blow.
But, Messi as always came in the rescue of Barca again in the 24th minute. He got a superb pass from Andres Iniesta, but, he still had to get rid of a couple of opposition players. He fumbled a bit, but, he eventually managed to go past both of them and then, with a crisp shot, he found the bottom corner of the net to make the score 1-1.
Quite a few superstars were going to feature in this Milan-Barca match and it was expected to be a full house at San Siro. It turned out to be a full house indeed as close to 75,000 spectators were out there to cheer for their favourite players.
Messi was the main attraction as he was coming back after recovering from a thigh problem. Some people might have expected him to be a bit rusty, but, the Argentinean didn’t look like that at all. He was fluent right from the word go.
Barcelona and AC Milan will again take on each other in a couple of weeks. That match will be played at Estadio Camp Nou and a victory there for Barca would put them in a great position to qualify for the next round.
This season the Premier League will be a very different animal from that of 2012/13 and the various management changes are having a significant impact on the betting odds. Notably, the current favourite club to win the league is Chelsea under the management of their returning prodigal manager Jose Mourinho. However, if you are looking for some exciting odds, why not take a punt on Tottenham Hotspur? Currently priced at up to 40/1 it could be a value bet.
Despite the loss of Harry Redknapp the cub still managed a 5th place finish last season and there is a strong squad for the start of the new season. Gareth Bale is still there and last season he scored almost a third of the clubs 66 goals. Last season the principle weakness was in defence, but there have been a number of transfers that have hopefully plugged the gap. Certainly Tottenham can expect to finish in the top four; but they do have a chance of winning that is certainly worth a small bet at 40/1; better odds than a spin on a roulette wheel and with a better chance of making a profit. Sandro Rosell, the president of Barcelona has made it clear that Lionel Messi will still be the star man at the club even though they have acquired the services of Brazilian wonder kid Neymar from Santos for a whopping € 50 million over the summer transfer window.
The recent acquisition of the Brazilian international led to club legend Johan Cruyff stating that the club should now look to selling the Argentina international skipper as both of them would not be able to function together in the same side and there will be too many ego problems but the Catalan lawyer has shrugged off that suggestion. According to Rosell, there are not two roosters in the same hen house, there is just one and he is Lionel Messi. Speaking to 8TV, a Catalan television station, Rosell mentioned that the club has signed Neymar, who is not just a great player but a great person as well.
He added that there is absolutely no other footballer on the planet that is better than Messi but they have brought in Neymar to assist him and help the club move forward as well. The arrival of Neymar has already seen Spanish international striker David Villa making the move away from the club to Atletico Madrid with the club pocketing € 5.1 million and Rosell believes this move was in the interest of both the parties involved.
Recently, the former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola suggested that Lionel Messi and Villa never got along at all since the highest goal scorer for the Spanish national side made the move to Barcelona in 2010 and that has prompted many to think that a friction between Messi and Neymar is inevitable and the result will mean that either one of the two will be sold by the club in the near future.
