Modric Claims The Club Has Ambition

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric says that the club’s decision to bring in the likes of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez for close to £ 100 million shows the ambition after having just won the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Madrid defeated Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final last season to lift the trophy. However, the biggest achievement for the team came in the form of the Champions League trophy, which was the 10th in the history of the club. Considering that they have been waiting for more than decade for this title, it was celebrated with a lot of joy.

However, focus has shifted to the next season and Madrid have strengthened the team even more by bringing in World Cup stars Kroos and Rodriguez. Both these players excelled at the World Cup 2014 with Germany and Colombia respectively. Kroos was responsible for Germany’s win in the competition after playing a starring role in the midfield, while Rodriguez finished as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals. Kroos has signed from Bayern Munich for £ 25 million, while Rodriguez comes from Monaco for around £ 65 million.

The club’s decision to splash out on these two big names is a sign of the ambition according to Modric, who is expected to remain a key part of the Madrid team.

“First, on a personal level, I hope to have a healthy year and avoid injury. Last year we had a great season. I hope we can repeat it and do even better [next year]. We have new players on the team – very, very good players. Expectations are always high at Real Madrid and I expect the same from the team and myself. I saw them [Kroos and Rodriguez] play in the World Cup and, for me, they were two of the best players in the competition,” said Modric.

Messi Blamed For Defeats

Lionel Messi has been destroying opponents with extreme fondness for the last few years, but the media have hit back with heavy criticism of the Argentine after he has been withdrawn from the action in the last few weeks. Messi has been branded as the chief culprit behind Barcelona’s three consecutive defeats. The club has effectively played with only 10 men on the pitch during this three matches in Messi has not been working hard enough according to the media. The statistics from the Champions League defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid certainly did not help matters for the Argentine superstar.

It showed that he had covered very little ground – in fact just a little more than the goalkeeper – during this defeat that saw Barcelona fail to reach the semifinals of the competition for the first time in seven years. There have been suggestions that Messi has been trying to protect himself from burning down especially with the World Cup in mind. Former Barcelona coach Cesar Luis Menotti has also come to the support of the player by saying that the 26-year-old appears to be suffering from mental tiredness.

Messi has been constantly playing football for the last few years. This season has marked the first time the player has missed several months due to injury.

“Messi has to overcome the sadness of poor performances and rediscover the joy, pride and passion it takes to play at a club like Barcelona. I’ve seen more mental fatigue than physical. It’s normal when there are a lot of games and he has many obligations. Maybe a couple of days rest would help him recompose his head and be the best in the world again,” said the former coach. Despite his perceived problems, Messi still has scored 38 goals in the league.

The star of Barcelona and Argentina, Lionel Messi came back from the injury he has been suffering from the past few months and has already made an immediate impact with Barcelona as he continues the superb form he has been enjoying in recent times by scoring goals and helping his club maintain the top spot in La Liga.

The Argentine superstar has a busy year ahead of him with Champions League, La Liga, and the 2014 World Cup is nearing closer and closer. Messi is hands down the most influential and important player not only for Barcelona but also for his country, Argentina.

Messi believes that this year can be a great one for Argentina as the team has been improving and growing both on and off the pitch.

“I’m very well, full of energy and with a lot of hope. I was able to play again after a long time. I’m happy with my current form and slowly but surely I will be getting there to hopefully peak at the right time of the year.”

He added: “I hope this could be a great year not only for me but also for Barcelona and for Argentina.

“I think this World Cup arrives at a good time for Argentina. We have grown as a team on and off the pitch. We have a great bunch of lads that love to play for our country. I think we will get to Brazil in a great shape and with all the chances in the world. It will be extra special, well above all the other World Cups; it is in Brazil, with everything that means for us. Our supporters will be there in their thousands and with them behind us I’m sure we can achieve something very, very special.”

Much of the responsibilities will be resting on Messi as he is not only the star player for Argentina but also the captain.
