World’s best footballer, Lionel Messi missed the curtain-raiser against Chile in the ongoing Copa America Centenario.

The star player took a hit in the friendly game against Honduras and has not been able to rest well as his recovery has been interrupted by court proceedings. The Argentine forward had to return to Barcelona to answer tax fraud charges last week.

The Captain was replaced by Nicolas Gaitan in Santa Clara. The Blaugrana star is reported to still be in pain due to the blow to his back, and decided he was not fit to start against Juan Antonio Pizzi’s side. The Argentine coach Gerardo Martino on Sunday told the press that Messi would be given the chance to prove his fitness ahead of the Chile match but that there was a replacement [Gaitan] to avoid risking the player.

The injury forced Argentina to play Gaitan in a three man attack. The Benfica winger joined Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria, making his first appearance in a major international tournament. Ahead of the much anticipated game, Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal said in a press conference on Sunday that he wanted Messi to play:

David Villa confident on Antoine Griezmann

Former Atletico Madrid forward David Villa believes that Antoine Griezmann is fast becoming one of the best players in the world.

He would classify the Frenchman is being on par with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – widely judged as the best players in the world. Griezmann has been linked with Chelsea in the last two transfer windows, but it is now looking highly unlikely that he will move away from the Vicente Calderon after having just experienced his best season till date. The French international has come up with 29 goals so far in all competitions.

Still just 25, Griezmann has the ability to develop his game even more. Villa was one of the renowned goalscorers during his peak. Even though he did not play for clubs like Real Madrid or Barcelona at the peak, there was always an interest surrounding the Spanish striker. Villa recently brought an end to his spell in European football by joining New York City FC. He has been a revelation in the MLS after being in fine goalscoring form at the start of the campaign. Villa did not have the chance to play with Griezmann as the French international came from Real Sociedad just as Villa was leaving. Continue reading David Villa confident on Antoine Griezmann

Luis Enrique is optimistic about the Champions League

Barcelona reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League after defeating Arsenal and was now pitted against Athletic Madrid. Even though Athletic Madrid are arguably one of the best teams that is still performing in the European competition, this does not seem to concern the head coach of Barcelona, Luis Enrique as he jokingly said that the only team he did not want to face was his own.

“The only team that I don’t want to draw is Barcelona. Luckily I don’t think we’ll get them, so I’m relaxed,” he said in his post-match press conference.

The other remaining clubs that are competing in the Champions League are: Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Athletic Madrid, Wolfsburg, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica and Manchester City.

This is the 9th consecutive time that Barcelona have managed to get into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and this is evidence of the dominance that the Spanish club has been displaying for the past few years.

It’s safe to assume that Barcelona are the favorites on winning the Champions League of this current season as Luis Enrique has at his disposal the attacking combination of Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi, this partnership is widely considered to be the best in the world if they get too overconfident it could finish with unexpected results and it’s what happened a few years ago during the quarterfinal stages of the 2013-14 Champions League season. Messi continues being hated by Argentina fans

Lionel Messi is widely considered to be the best player in the world, some even say that he’s the best in the history of the sport and this is mainly due to the feats that he has accomplished with Barcelona. Whenever he plays wearing a jersey of the Spanish club, Messi plays like his life is on the line and he makes sublime performances in every single match.

Things are completely different when Messi is performing with the Argentina shirt, the diminutive simply doesn’t seem like the same player. With Argentina, Messi is usually performing at a mediocre level there are some exceptions however, but in the vast majority of the times, his performances are underwhelming especially when compared to his Barcelona ones.

It’s because of this difference that exists in his performances with Barcelona and Argentina that the supporters of the Argentina national side have started to take a hate towards Lionel Messi as those fans want to see Messi pushing Argentina to success and help them win a number of major titles but it hasn’t happened.

Since the beginning of Messi’s career, he has had a love hate relationship with the Argentina fanboys. There certainly are people who support him but there are others who believe that he isn’t giving it his all when it comes to playing at the international stage with Argentina and have developed a hate towards him, this was especially evident in recent times when Lionel Messi was travelling through Tokyo’s Narita airport and a River Plate supporter spit at Barcelona’s ace. Dani Alves claims that Lionel Messi is much better than Cristiano Ronaldo

Barcelona defender Dani Alves claims that Lionel Messi is much better than Cristiano Ronaldo since he is more of a team player.

Ronaldo has been criticised for his focus on personal statistics more than the performance of the team. Messi, on the other hand, has not worry too much about being able to end up as the top scorer in the la Liga last season. This is despite having plenty of chances to get past Ronaldo. On several occasions last season, Messi provided the likes of Luis Suarez and Neymar with an opportunity to score.

Alves recently ended speculation about an impending move to Paris St Germain or Manchester United by extending his contract with Barcelona. He was just a few weeks away from becoming a free agent but the Catalan club have signed him on a long-term contract even though he is above 30 years of age. The defender has signed a two-year deal with the option to add a further year. His presence cannot come at a much better time for Barcelona, who are struggling with the transfer ban. Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or award in the last two seasons, but he is facing a tough fight from Messi once again for the upcoming trophy.
